Job Purpose

The Finance Manager is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and ensuring effective financial planning, budgeting, reporting, treasury management, investment analysis, statutory compliance, risk management, and internal controls. The position supports the achievement of KICL’s strategic objectives by ensuring prudent financial resource allocation, financial sustainability, and full alignment with regulatory frameworks and corporate governance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and review the company’s financial strategies, policies, and procedures to support business growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual corporate budget, financial forecasts, and business plans in collaboration with heads of departments.
  • Monitor budget implementation, analyze variances, and recommend corrective actions to optimize financial performance.
  • Provide financial advisory support to the CEO and Board of Directors on strategic initiatives, investments, and capital structuring.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS and statutory requirements.
  • Oversee the maintenance of complete and up-to-date accounting records, general ledgers, and subsidiary ledgers across all company entities.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual external audit process, ensuring timely resolution of audit queries and implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Prepare and present financial and management reports to the CEO and the Board Audit & Risk Committee.
  • Manage the company’s treasury operations, cash flow projections, and liquidity to ensure optimal fund availability for operational and investment activities.
  • Develop and execute prudent investment strategies for surplus funds to maximize returns while managing liquidity and risk.
  • Manage banking relationships, negotiate favorable credit terms, and oversee debt structuring and repayment schedules.
  • Monitor real estate project cash flows, cost allocations, and revenue collections to safeguard project viability.
  • Ensure full compliance with all tax laws (VAT, Corporate Tax, PAYE, Withholding Tax, etc.) and timely filing of all statutory returns.
  • Proactively manage tax planning, handle KRA audits, and ensure prompt resolution of any tax disputes.
  • Ensure adherence to all legal, regulatory, and corporate governance standards governing financial operations.
  • Maintain a robust internal control environment to safeguard company assets and prevent fraud, errors, or financial irregularities.
  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate financial and operational risks facing the business.
  • Drive cost management and operational efficiency initiatives across all departments without compromising service quality.
  • Oversee procurement financial vetting, contract reviews, and supplier payment processes.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team to foster high performance, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Set clear performance targets, conduct regular appraisals, and support the professional growth of team members.
  • Promote a culture of integrity, accountability, and excellence within the finance department.

Academic & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Accounting/Finance option), Business Administration, Economics, or a related field from a recognized university.
  • Master’s degree in Finance, Strategic Management, MBA, or related field is an added advantage.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification is mandatory.
  • Active and good-standing membership in ICPAK or equivalent recognized professional body.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7–10 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 3–5 years in a senior finance leadership role (Finance Manager, Head of Finance, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience in the real estate, property development, or investment management sector is strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record in financial strategy development, treasury management, complex budgeting, and external audit management.
  • Experience in working with and reporting to Boards of Directors / Board Committees.

Technical Competencies & Skills

  • Deep knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Kenyan tax laws, and statutory compliance frameworks.
  • Advanced proficiency in modern ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Business Central, QuickBooks) and advanced MS Excel/financial modeling tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability in financial risk assessment, investment appraisal, and capital structure optimization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present complex financial data clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity, ethical standards, confidentiality, and professional independence.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and leadership skills with the ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
